THE BIG READ: ALABAMA READS THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER

Read for the fun of it ... that’s Alabama’s clarion call for its Big Read event from February 1 through April 30.

The selected title for Alabama's first statewide Big Read is "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain. Some 210 Alabama public libraries are taking part. Check out your local public library for events. Moundville Public Library for instance is arranging book discussions, a community picnic, speakers, and special programs throughout April.

The Big Read, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture, is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings communities together to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 30 selections from US and world literature to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

Grants worth millions of dollars benefit arts groups, libraries, science organizations, colleges, and municipalities to host Big Read celebrations.
