Dazzling Honolulu Festival Returns with Free Weekend

A treasured celebration of cultural diversity for the whole family to enjoy, the Honolulu Festival returns with a full slate of music, dance, crafts, arts, special exhibits, and fireworks display presented by the people of Asia Pacific on March 3 and 4.
Admission to the Festival performances and exhibit display is free to everyone and is being hosted at three convenient locations – Hawaii Convention Center, Ala Moana Center, and Waikiki Beach Walk – on Saturday, March 3, from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday, March 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Following Sunday’s performances, the festivities shift to Waikiki for the Festival’s finale. The visiting performers from Asia Pacific will entertain in the Waikiki Grand Parade on Kalakaua Avenue, starting at 4:30pm, followed by the spectacular Nagaoka Fireworks Show making its first appearance outside of Japan to light up the skies over Waikiki Beach.
Last year’s Honolulu Festival was interrupted by the tragic earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, the eve of the Festival’s opening. While the Festival proceeded with most of its scheduled activities, more than 30 performing groups comprising more than 800 visitors from Japan had to cancel their trip to Honolulu, with the highly anticipated fireworks show from Nagaoka also canceled out of respect to the victims and their families.
Presented under the banner of “Pacific Harmony,” the theme for this year’s Honolulu Festival is “Bonding together, hand in hand.” More than 4,500 performers and visitors are coming to Hawaii from Asia Pacific, mostly Japan. Performers representing the cultures of Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, the Philippines, Canada, Alaska, U.S. Mainland, and Hawaii will dazzle guests with their entertaining displays of music and dance.
Visit Honolulu Festival for more information and for its schedule of cultural performances and displays.

Find the Luck o’ the Irish in Massachusetts

Once a year in mid-March, Massachusetts turns shades of green and the sound of bagpipes fill the air. And while St. Patrick’s Day is traditionally when Irish culture is celebrated, it doesn’t have to be March to embrace your inner Celtic.
Explore Boston and its surrounding neighborhoods as you experience nearly 300 years of Irish history on the Irish Heritage Trail. The tour begins at the Rose Kennedy Garden near the waterfront and ends at Fenway Park, which was built 100 years ago by Irish immigrant Charles E. Logue. In total, more than 70 Irish landmarks have been compiled throughout Massachusetts. The Boston Irish Tourism Association can help you.
There are a number of St. Patrick’s Day Parades.
Sponsored by the Allied War Veteran’s Council, the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the 2nd largest parade in the country. It is viewed in person by more than 600,000 people and aired on live TV. Held on March 18, the parade will go from West Broadway, looping through South Boston, ending at Dorchester Avenue.
South of Boston, held the Sunday after St. Patrick’s Day, the Town of Abington parade invites all – Irish or not – to celebrate its cultural history. The parade beings at 1 p.m. in Abington Center at what is appropriately titled St. Patrick’s Square.
See what the excitement is all about at one of the most anticipated events of the year on Cape Cod. Hear the sounds of the Celtic from multiple marching bands and crowd favorites, the “Mummers.”
In Central Massachusetts Worcester County’s St. Patrick’s Parade takes place on Sunday, March 11, and starts at Park Avenue in Worcester.
The two-day Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade and Road Race in Western Massachusetts takes place Saturday and Sunday, March 17 and 18.

Birds Head for Grand Island, Nebraska

Each spring something magical happens in the Platte River Valley. Nebraska: More than 80% (500,000+) of the world's population of Sandhill Cranes converge on this critical sliver of threatened habitat. Millions of migrating ducks and geese arrive with them.
National Geographic named this annual migration as one of North America’s two greatest natural wildlife phenomena, the other being Alaska’s Caribou migration. Designated as the #1 place in the world for bird watchers by Forbes FYI, Grand Island and Hall County are at the heart of the Central Flyway. This one-of-a-kind experience draws beginning birders to scientists from across the country and across the globe.
The Crane Trust Nature & Visitor Center is the hub for migration activities offering bridge and blind tours to view cranes up close, presentations, exhibits and a gift shop. The Center’s 2012 events were planned taking cues from the book and recent film The Big Year – starring Jack Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wiilson. Events include book discussions, a screening of the film and a day-trip with Greg Miller, inspiration for the book and for Jack Black’s character.
The gallery in the Nature & Visitor Center showcases artists throughout the year. Prairie Winds Art Center and Stuhr Museum – one of the top living history museums in the country according to Good Housekeeping magazine – also display and sell crane-related artwork during March.
The peak of the migration occurs during the second half of March. Towards the end of March, you might also catch a glimpse of endangered Whooping Cranes or venture into the Sandhills to watch the colorful mating rituals of the Prairie Chickens.
Come dance with the cranes this March, an event that The New York Times bestseller 1,000 Places To See Before You Die calls a “must see.”
